Kasko Cattle Co. is a family owned custom cattle feeding and farming business with four feedlot locations in southern Alberta: The Home Lot and North Lot near Coaldale, HWY 52 near Raymond and Sandy Hill near Taber.  We can see up to 70,000 head of cattle through their feedlots annually.  Kasko Cattle is proud to be a progressive, customer-centered feedlot and farming business.  We focus heavily on consistency, food safety and environmental and economic sustainability.

Position Overview:

The primary role of the Pen Checker is to maintain health and welfare of cattle and perform disease prevention activities.  The Pen Checker will identify, pull, and treat sick or injured cattle in a timely manner to ensure cattle health.  The Pen Checker plays a critical role in working with Kasko’s veterinarian to ensure cattle are treated appropriately.  The Pen Checker is responsible for keeping accurate records of treatment cattle receive since this is essential for safe shipping.

Job Description: 

Currently hiring a permanent, full-time position at our Sandy Hill location, near Taber, AB.

Primary Responsibilities:

Cattle Health:

  • Check & treat cattle according to vet treatment protocols
  • Ensure cattle are pulled and treated in a humane & timely manner
  • Record health statistics in electronic health software program

Pen Maintenance:

  • Clean water bowls weekly and as needed
  • Fix broken boards, gates, etc.
  • Clear pens of rocks and other debris

Treatment Barn (Hospital):

  • Clean & maintain treatment barn
  • Clean tools regularly (including syringes, squeeze, thermometer, calving chains, bloat tubes, needles, etc.)

Other Duties:

  • Assist loading, moving & processing cattle
  • Ensure cattle in proper pens
  • Horse care, if applicable
  • Other duties as required

Education, Qualifications & Experience

  • High School diploma is preferred.
  • Post Secondary Education in a related field is an asset.
  • Experience working in the Agriculture industry is preferred.
  • Experience working on a feedlot is preferred.
  • Cattle health knowledge and cattle handling skills are required.
