Job Summary:

The Milking Supervisor is responsible for the planning, prioritization, communication and monitoring of milking operations, including staff, production, animal care, equipment, facilities, and related administration. This role is also accountable for the execution of certain hands-on tasks and data entry.

Responsibilities:  

 

  • Oversee, plan, implement, manage and monitor day-to-day department operations Including quality, efficiency, safety to ensure ongoing progress and success.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of departmental strategies, plans and procedures.
  • Monitor and report on departmental goals and metrics.
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Operations Manager in all matters of importance.
  • Support development and Ensure staff adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG’s).
  • Regularly evaluate the efficiency of operational procedures according to departmental objectives and apply necessary improvements.
  • Ensure that any required documentation, permits and certifications pertaining to department operations are kept up-to-date.
  • Responsible for scheduled maintenance and repair with-in established limits co-ordinate with contractors when necessary.
  • Responsible for contractors, purchases of equipment, parts, supplies and inventory for milking facility with-in established limits.
  • Review and verify department invoices prior to providing them to the Operations Manager for approval.
  • Oversee relationships/agreements with external suppliers/vendors.
  • Oversee animal wellbeing and care  with-in the milking, holding area  and movements of animals to and from the facilities ,
  • Oversee the activities of staff, before and during the milking process outside of the parlor including calving assistance and associated documentations and actions; stall, waterer, and cattle crossing cleanliness and associated actions.
  • Must be responsible for udder and teat health, diagnose and treat milking /udder diseases. Consult with barn/herd supervisor, external consultants and the veterinarian as needed.
  • Required to make  culling. recommendations. Consult with barn/herd supervisor, external consultants and the veterinarian as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to the Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) program, including daily checklist, self-audits, and coordination of on-site visits.
  • Review milking times and efficiency reports and address issues as where necessary.
  • Support farm planning by collecting and providing relevant data, such as milk production, and forecasts to management.
  • Maintain records for cleaning, department equipment maintenance, and upgrades.  
  • Respond to emergency equipment and facility failures, repairs and maintenance, coordinate with Field / Yard Forman.
  • Manage and oversee direct reports, including recruitment, on-boarding, performance management, employee development, training, and general support.
  • Direct employees in accordance with the company’s policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures.
  • Manage staff workload incorporating daily work tasks and deadlines.
  • Review and verify time records, additional hours, and leave applications for direct department employees.
  • Keep abreast of industry and technology changes and trends and implement approved best appropriate practices.
  • Demonstrate proper animal welfare procedures and standards.
  • Participate in special projects as directed by the Operations Manager.
